As one of the most influential and imaginative music companies globally, we recognise the role we can play in encouraging positive change across our network.
In support of the UK government’s target of becoming net zero by 2050, we are working with our composers and partners to explore new approaches to music-making, including reducing travel, using renewable energy and adopting remote production practices.
Produced with Purpose enables our composers to create beautiful, innovative music while considering how music is produced and the practical steps they can take to reduce its impact.
Universal Production Music partners with BAFTA albert’s Green Light Season
Through this partnership, we will support discussions around long-term changes in production practices. Produced with Purpose will soundtrack the event’s social media content and be played during the event, encouraging discussions with BAFTA members and UK screen industry leaders.
Soundtrack for a Purposeful Future
We have partnered with Pilio, a leading energy and environmental innovation company, to establish production guidelines that encourage composers to consider areas such as energy use, travel, and working practices.
Composers who follow these guidelines carefully craft the Produced with Purpose collection.

Our Produced with Purpose composers are exploring practical changes to how they work and adapting their production practices.
Below are examples of specific steps taken by individual composers, including renewable energy, remote collaboration and reduced travel.
Jesse Quin
RENEWABLE ENERGY
Jesse Quin, the bass player of Keane, carries out his work from a converted air hangar located on an old American Air Force base in the English countryside. The studio's distinctive feature is its on-site power station, which houses anaerobic digestion domes. These domes are fuelled with organic matter such as farm waste which produces heat and gas that power the studio on green electricity.
Steve Everitt
SPACE FOR NATURE
Steve Everitt is a composer, beekeeper, and gardener who has converted his space into a private nature reserve. He has planted over 1000 trees and is committed to restoring ecological balance. Steve is also installing solar panels to provide power for his studios and accommodation for artist-producers.
Manu Brant & Karina Ramage
CLOUD STORAGE & LONG DISTANCE GREEN WORKING
Manu and Karina started collaborating in London; in 2019, Manu moved to Berlin to change his work style, and Karina built a home studio in her garden. Despite the distance, they continued to make music together by using remote collaboration tools such as Zoom, WhatsApp, and Audio Movers, and eco-friendly platforms like Dropbox and WeTransfer.
Their remote workflow lets them collaborate between London and Berlin without needing to work in the same physical location.
Sylvia Navarro
RENEWABLE ENERGY
Sylvia incorporated solar energy into her creative process has had a profound impact. It has given her a deeper sense of purpose and self-reliance, which has enriched her artistic journey. Using solar energy has also helped reduce her energy costs and the emissions associated with her electricity use.
Affordable solutions
In the UK, government schemes help eligible households with energy-efficiency measures and technologies such as solar panels.
Composers such as Mic Burns, who are eligible for these schemes, may be able to use them to support changes to the way their studios or homes use energy.
One example is ECO4, which supports eligible households in improving energy efficiency.
