Josh Safdie's latest '50s ping pong drama Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, has already made a bold entrance across cinema screens.
The film score was composed by American electronic producer, composer and singer-songwriter Daniel Lopatin. Having previously composed music for the Safdie brothers' Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019), Lopatin’s work has been described as 'recontextualising' music styles from different eras and time periods, experimenting with an array of genres, samples and sounds.
Despite several songs in keeping with the film's 1950’s setting, several 80’s hits also feature throughout - including 'The Perfect Kiss' by New Order, 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' by Tears for Fears and 'Forever Young' by Alphaville. By pairing such memorable tunes with the film's distinct 1950’s New York backdrop, Lopatin's genre-bending and experimental approach continues to feed the plot's kinetic and chaotic energy. Through a mix of neoclassical orchestra, ambient textures and 80s synth-pop, the film score often mimics the rhythmic suspense and intensifying ambition of Marty Mauser's inner world.
