The Green Room with Jesse Quin

Introducing our latest series, The Green Room, where we find out how our green composers are creating music more sustainably. The Green Room is part of our Green Production Music initiative, where we're working to set a new standard in the music industry for environmental responsibility.

In this instalment, we took a visit to Suffolk, UK, to meet with green composer and Keane bass-player, Jesse Quin. In 2013, Jesse founded a collaborative arts centre called Old Jet, located on an ex-US Air Force Base. The arts centre offers several flexible spaces that are frequently used for events, filming, photo shoots, rehearsals, and also supplies arts-based storage for theatre companies, touring music artists.

Old Jet runs on 100% renewable energy supplied by an on-site biomass digestion plant. By feeding the digester rye, maize, and beet pulp, the machine breaks down these materials to produce methane gas. This gas fuels large engines, which transform the energy into electricity, both powering the Old Jet Arts Centre and generating additional electricity. This electricity can be sold back to the National Grid and used to supply the local area.
