5 Tips for Protecting Your Production Gear From Overheating
Intense heat and sunshine can be camera killers, so keeping your equipment cool is essential if you're shooting outdoors (or anywhere!) in hot weather. Here are a few tips for protecting your costly gear from the heat so you can get on with creating cool content:
Provide Shade/Air Flow
Umbrellas are arguably one of the most useful inventions ever - and keeping a few on set is key for providing blissful shade for your equipment. Or a giant tarp. Or all of the above. Also, whether you bring a larger fan to cover the whole set or smaller fans to attach to your cameras, sufficient air movement helps a lot, too.
Keep Your Equipment in the Bag
When your camera isn't in use, keep it out of the sun by putting it back in the bag. This is especially important if your camera is black (as most are) or a dark color. Bonus: It'll stay protected from everything else, too.
Wrap it in a Towel
Putting your camera back in the bag or shielding it with an umbrella aren't the only ways to keep it out of direct sunlight; wrapping it in a towel is a good strategy, too. It will keep it sheltered, and you can put it over your head to shield your viewfinder from glare in bright sunlight.
Use Cold Gel Packs (Or a Cooler)
For really, really hot environments, you may consider sticking a gel pack in that towel. It will provide the relief your camera needs, and you won't have to worry about the camera getting wet. You can also include a gel pack or two in your camera bag. If you're worried about it getting too cold, you can always stick it in one of the outside pockets. A cooler is also a good option, as long as you monitor and ensure your gear doesn't get too cold.
Use Faster Memory Cards / Remove Your External Battery
Internal heat + hot weather = melting camera. One way to keep your camera from becoming too hot internally is to use a faster memory card. Also, remove that hot battery! External battery sources are a prime offender when it comes to overheating equipment. Taking it out (if your camera runs on an external battery, of course) can make a big difference.
