There are moments in life where plans fall away in an instant, replaced by instinct, urgency, and raw human emotion. For Ford’s Mother’s Day campaign, the creative challenge was to honor one of those moments truthfully – a mother caught off guard by timing, supported by EMTs as uncertainty builds into intensity, and intensity gives way to the overwhelming joy of new life.

For the music, the brief demanded restraint as much as expression. The score needed to support documentary realism while still elevating the emotional stakes making it present enough to feel, but never so much that it overpowered the authenticity of the story.

Building tension, and finding the human core

At the heart of the composition was a carefully controlled dynamic: tension and release, shaped to reflect a deeply personal and high-pressure moment. Because this is such a personal experience, the music needed to feel close and human, almost as if it were reflecting the internal emotional state of those involved.

The key was to let the music move with the narrative. Rather than driving the story, it responds to it, allowing silence, space, and natural sound design to carry equal weight. This approach reflects the balance often explored in documentary storytelling, where authenticity must remain intact while still guiding emotional engagement.

This project was a great example of a Universal Production Music team collaboration at its best. Our outstanding composers Jaron Takach and Tim Greer created a strong original foundation while Patrick Cunningham complemented it with a beautiful custom adaptation. I was proud to help guide the production and creative process along with Christina May and the team at VML. The end result is something heartfelt, impactful and we’re thankful for the opportunity to contribute.” — Lucas Spry, Executive Producer

Redefining ‘Ford Tough’

For Christina May, Head of Music Direction at Universal Production Music, the brief pushed her to think differently about what the Ford brand means. "This was one of the most unexpected projects I’ve been lucky enough to work on. Ford has long stood for toughness, but this campaign asks us to reimagine what defines toughness and is there anything tougher than a woman? Its focus is on the real-life stories of mothers, in one of the most high stakes moments of their lives. Finding music which honors that humanity took time and intention. Initially, I worked closely with the team at VML to understand the exact feelings they hoped to evoke, and we landed on the perfect Universal Production Music track, well, almost perfect. To truly serve this piece, it needed something more. Together with Universal Production Music producer Lucas Spry and composer Patrick Cunningham, we worked hand in hand with the incredible creatives behind this concept, to shape the music into something that could truly meet the moment. The result is a campaign that does justice to the real mothers, babies and EMTs at the heart of it and a reminder of why this work matters.”

Christina’s perspective captures the heart of the project. This campaign reframes “Ford Tough” through a human lens, grounded not in machinery but in resilience, instinct, and lived experience. Music plays a key role in supporting that shift, helping to carry both the intensity and emotional release of the story.

A lasting emotional imprint

In the end, the success of the track lies in its ability to stay with the viewer without drawing attention to itself. Like the story it supports, it builds quietly, reaches an emotional peak, and resolves into something simple and human. This is a moment that becomes part of a family’s history. Unexpected, intense, and unforgettable. The music’s role is to honor that truth, shaping an emotional journey that feels as real as the experience itself.

It is a rare opportunity to help shape the emotional core of a campaign like this, and one we are proud to have been part of. From the earliest creative discussions through to final delivery, the focus remained on using music to support, elevate, and connect.
