A Defining Moment in Cinematic Folk Songwriting
“Where Is Your Heart? | Cinematic Folk Songs” is a deeply personal title. For Shameka, the project represents clarity and conviction in her creative direction.
"I knew I was a folk writer the moment I picked up my first nylon string guitar while in college. I loved storytelling and minimalistic productions, and I would always write songs that some say felt poetic and niche. But this genre wasn’t what was expected and at some moments desired of me, and I often felt overlooked in the acoustic singer/songwriter space. But once I was afforded this opportunity, it felt like an omen. It suggested that the decision was mine to present my art in the way it naturally comes, and allow the people for whom it is for to connect with it. With this project, I hope to express my thoughts on love and the pursuit thereof, wrapped in soft vocals, acoustic guitars, cinematic ambience, and organic rhythms. This is my expression on cinematic folk songs."

Trusting Creative Instincts as a Songwriter and Producer
"The funny part about that is I initially drafted in other producers, but scheduling conflicts didn’t allow those collaborations to happen, and I was left with the task of trusting my own creativity. Initially I immersed myself in the genre and studied what was being placed on some of my favorites shows, but in the end I think I stripped away a lot of the elements that felt inauthentic to me. I wanted this project to reflect the purpose for which it was created, but also I wanted it to feel like something I could personally be proud of. Many of the songs were inspired while watching stories on TV, and many were inspired by questions that I continuously ask myself. I did have the chance to bring in a friend Chad Chambers to assist on lyrics for two of the songs, because I do believe in the power of collaboration. For me, the beauty was in being able trust my creativity as a songwriter and producer while also trusting my intuition when it nudges me to seek out other voices."
This balance between independence and collaboration gives the album a cohesive sound while allowing space for shared creative energy. For music supervisors and storytellers seeking authentic, emotionally grounded production music, that intentionality is felt in every arrangement.
From Global Stages to Intimate Composition
Shameka’s artistic range extends from leading onstage in Cirque du Soleil’s Mad Apple to composing cinematic, intimate songs for visual media. Those experiences continue to inform one another.
"I like to say that I’ve lived many lives. Before Cirque Du Soleil I was touring as a background vocalist, and holding residencies in Dubai, while also writing songs for film and television. I’ve lived in different cities and became who I needed to become to thrive in each place. And now what I’m learning is that with each life, I’m becoming more refined. I’m allowing every role to inspire me but I’m also holding tight to what I believe my core creative expression is. Cirque [Du Soleil] has provided me with an intimate study of orchestrating popular music as well as abstract compositions. It’s allowed me to witness the fruit of consistency, intuition, and subtlety. Playing the same songs daily requires you to find inspiration in the smallest moments, and you take note of the impact of coloring your expression in different ways. I believe that has translated to my songwriting because I aim for subtlety and small changes that lift the emotion of the song, rather than grand performances.
I think also at this point in my life, I have space to mentally explore my own voice. I audit what I’ve done in the past, and the sounds and influences I’ve picked up but never shared a true connection with. I’m learning to sit inside of my natural expression, to push the boundaries of what I’ve previously created, and to allow the right opportunities and community to find me."
Her focus on subtle emotional shifts and refined orchestration makes her music particularly powerful in film, television, and branded storytelling where nuance drives impact.
Expanding Representation in Production Music
As a composer and songwriter navigating the industry as a Black woman, Shameka is deeply aware of the importance of representation and opportunity in creative spaces.
"I don’t know if I’ve ever realized it until recently that finding other black women in the spaces I aspire to be in signals that the door is also open for me. When you grow up in a culture that often feeds you limitations before possibilities, it matters when others have crossed over those bridges that seemed insurmountable. I’ve researched and I’ve been inspired by so many black women composers, as I’m still discovering [how to] exist past and present. For me to exist in this space now, I would hope another composer may see the possibilities for themselves through me."
Her contribution adds depth and diversity to our extensive production music catalog, helping us shape a richer and more inclusive creative culture.
Carrying Stories Forward Through Music
At the heart of Shameka’s work is storytelling. Whether through cinematic folk songs, acoustic ballads, or instrumental compositions for visual media, her goal remains consistent.
"Honestly, I rarely think about legacy. Maybe never on the personal level. But I imagine the more we contribute goodness and creativity and love to the culture, it will shape a beautiful future for those who may be unaware of our contributions, but who can benefit from them. Diversity of thought, expression, and sound is necessary for a rich culture to thrive. I just want to add to that gumbo in any way that I can."
